    Maintenance Tips for Sawmills

    • Track Alignment Should Be Re-Checked After Every Relocation 
       Portable sawmills often lose rail alignment when moved. Use a straightedge and feeler gauge to re-level and re-align tracks, especially before cutting larger logs. 

    • Debark Logs Before Milling to Protect Blade Life 
       Bark contains dirt, rocks, and grit that dull blades quickly. A simple log debarker or chainsaw pass can significantly extend blade sharpness and reduce wear on bearings. 

    • Drain and Refill Fuel If the Mill Sits Idle for Over 30 Days 
       Gasoline can degrade and gum up small engines. If your sawmill is seasonal, always drain old fuel and add fresh with stabilizer before restarting. 

    • Retension the Blade Frequently in Humid Weather 
       Humidity and temperature swings affect blade tension. Recheck and adjust blade tension to avoid wavy cuts or premature band failure during long workdays.

    1. How big of a log can I cut with a 30” sawmill? 

      A 30” sawmill typically cuts logs up to 30” in diameter and around 10–16 feet in length, depending on the track setup. 

    1. How long does a bandsaw blade last?  

      Blade life varies by wood type and cleanliness: 

      • Clean softwood: 4–6 hours 

      • Dirty hardwood: 1–3 hours 
         Sharpening can extend blade use up to 5 times. 

    1. Can one person operate a portable sawmill alone? 

      Yes — most portable sawmills are designed for solo use. However, log loading may require ramps, winches, or a tractor for safety. 

    1. Do you sell track extensions?
