Tire Changer Guide for the Winter Switchover

As winter approaches
vehicle owners and shop owners alike face one of the busiest times of the year: the annual rush to switch over to cold-weather tires. High volume, tight turnarounds, and demanding tire specs (like rigid sidewalls on winter or low-profile tires) can quickly make seasonal changeovers a tedious job.

Having a reliable, commercial-grade tire changer in your bay or setup ensures you handle seasonal volume efficiently, safely, and without unnecessary physical strain.

Feature Product: TMG-TC28A Semi-Automatic Tire Changer

The TMG-TC28A combines heavy-duty steel construction with pneumatic assistance. CETL Certified for safe commercial use across Canada and the U.S., it delivers a clean, rim-safe process for seasonal tire changeovers wherever you have basic shop power and compressed air.

Key Operational Features

  • Standard 120V Power: The electric turntable motor plugs into a standard single-phase 120V outlet, allowing for easy integration without needing high-voltage electrical service upgrades.

  • Rim Protection & Clamping: Four heavy-duty self-centering jaws with dual pneumatic cylinders deliver smooth, even clamping pressure. Protective covers on each jaw tooth safeguard custom aluminum and alloy rims against scratches.

  • Tilt-Back Tower: The pneumatic tilt-back design clears space over the turntable for straightforward wheel positioning in tighter workspace layouts.

  • Optional Pneumatic Assist Arm ( sold separately): Stiff winter tire beads and low-profile sidewalls can be nearly impossible to manage manually. The TMG-PAT28 assist arm applies upward and downward pressure to guide the tire bead into the drop center, saving your back and arms from intense physical strain.

Need a different capacity or feature set? If you handle standard passenger tires and do not require an assist arm, you can opt for the base TMG-TC28. TMG Industrial also offers a wider lineup of tire changers in various sizes and specs to fit different workspace layouts and vehicle fleets.

Essential Terminology: Tire & Wheel Anatomy

Understanding basic tire structure highlights why assist mechanisms and rim guards are critical during winter changeovers:

  • Rim: The metal wheel assembly supporting the rubber tire.

  • Sidewall: The side area of the tire between the rim flange and tread.

  • Bead: The rubber-and-steel edge of the tire that seats securely against the rim to form an airtight seal.

  • Low-Profile Tire: A tire with a shorter sidewall relative to its width. Because these sidewalls are significantly stiffer, an assist arm helps guide the bead without damaging the tire or rim.

Step-by-Step: The Seasonal Tire Mounting & Dismounting Process

Executing a complete seasonal tire switchover follows four straightforward steps:

  1. Bead Breaking & Clamping: Fully deflate the tire. Use the side-mounted pneumatic bead breaker to unseat the tire bead on both sides. Place the wheel on the turntable and actuate the foot pedal to clamp the rim using the dual pneumatic cylinders (14"–28" internal or 12"–26" external).

  2. Dismounting the Summer/All-Season Tire: Tilt the main tower forward into place and lock the mount/dismount head near the rim edge. Lift the top bead over the head with a pry bar. On stiff sidewalls or cold winter rubber, engage the TMG-PAT28 Pneumatic Assist Arm to push down on the tire, allowing the bead to slip smoothly over the tool as the turntable rotates.

  3. Mounting the Winter Tire: Apply tire lubricant to both beads of the new winter tire. Position the lower bead onto the mount head and rotate the turntable to seat it. Use the assist arm to apply downward force on the upper sidewall during rotation, guiding the top bead cleanly over the rim edge.

  4. Seating & Inflation: Once both beads are past the rim flange, inflate the tire using the integrated air supply to pop the beads securely into place before balancing and mounting to the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What utility connections are required to run this tire changer?

The turntable drive motor operates on a standard 120V single-phase power supply, while the clamping jaws, bead breaker, tilt tower, and pneumatic assist arm run off a standard compressed air setup operating between 110 and 145 PSI.

2. Why is an assist arm helpful for winter tire changes?

Winter tire rubber compounds and reinforced sidewalls are built to remain firm in freezing temperatures, making them much stiffer to work with than standard all-season tires. A pneumatic assist arm acts as an extra set of heavy-duty hands, keeping the bead pressed into the rim drop center during rotation so you do not have to muscle it manually.

3. How does the TMG-TC28A protect delicate or custom wheels?

The unit comes equipped with protective covers on each of its four clamping jaw teeth, as well as protective inserts on the mount/dismount head. This prevents direct metal-to-metal contact with painted or aluminum alloy rims during clamping and mounting.
