To protect your pavers when using a plate compactor, always use a rubber mat or a polyurethane pad specifically designed for plate compactors. This layer acts as a cushion, preventing the metal plate from making direct contact with the pavers, which could cause chips, cracks, or surface scratches. If a specialized pad isn't available, a flat steel plate with a protective layer (like rubber sheeting) can also help distribute vibrations more evenly and reduce damage. Additionally, make sure the pavers are properly set and clean of debris before compacting. 

To improve your drum rolling technique, make sure you’re applying consistent downward pressure and letting the roller’s weight do most of the work.
